The original Mariazeller recipe, created in 1883 by Cajetan Arzberger and still produced to the secret family formula of 33 herbs, fruits, blossoms, seeds and roots. Agricultural ethyl alcohol carries the maceration, cut with 4% plum brandy (Zwetschkenbrand), and the finish leans into the bitter root-extract side of the blend. Reddish-brown from the maceration and a caramel syrup addition, with a bitterness the EU-registered specification likens to 80% dark chocolate. Minimum sugar content 100g/l as invert sugar per the geographical indication specification.
